Choices – Hon. Christian Inkwell

Today, I received your correspondence in the post, delivered despite the burdensome rain. I watch the youngsters sprint up and down the lane, and I wonder where the time has gone. My mind has great expectations, but my body lacks cooperation. Despite the weather and my aches, I was encouraged to receive word from you. I am delighted to hear you are well and as exuberant as ever.

As I considered the wisdom of your pen, I recall the words of the great Apostle Paul,

“Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Col. 3:1-3

As I recounted to you in my last correspondence, my dear friend,  it is difficult to see the hand of God in these times. Injustice seems to rejoice in its constant victory. I am sure you have heard of the pugnacious acts against our old and trusted ally and the frivolity in the conduct of our current administration. Our leaders spend their time bowing to the rule of earthly kings while at the same time denying the one true Sovereign. Congress is drunk with its infatuation with the current executive. The constant delegation of its responsibility in the face of the citizens’ dangers exhibits an arguably callous insensitivity. Our leaders appear to lack a sense of shame in their conduct, sometimes even acting in ways that implicitly diminish the sacrifices of those who paid for our freedoms with their lives.

The problem is a general lack of leadership and of Godly character in our leaders, a point you so eloquently elucidate in your letter. They dare to act without fear of the Almighty. As I provide this accounting, dear friend, I am reminded of the words of our former President, General George Washington,

“However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterward the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.”

Such is evident in the conduct of some of the members of Congress. They purposely allow a precarious tip in the delicate balance of power, potentially destroying the engines that have lifted them to their current positions. It is a tragedy that I should have witnessed such an event, but as you so eloquently pointed out, dear friend, the Lord Almighty is not slow in His promises. I recognize that despite appearances, I will strive to see what Elisha’s servant saw when surrounded by the world’s army. Not every knee has bowed to the king of this world.

These events, and many others we have not yet discussed, but some of which you are aware, have created unrest in the hearts, not unlike what we felt many years ago as young men. Recall, my dear friend, how the passion of our leaders stirred our souls. Those leaders sparked a fire that spread further than we hoped or imagined. Such hope born on the shoulders of frustration and righteous anger was evident today. Today, I pray, will be a sign of the coming of the Spring Rain.

My dearest friend, beseech the Lord on our behalf that we will receive His mercy and this land will again experience His blessings. May His cleansing fire spread, and may the healing rain follow.

In honest affection,

– Hon. Christian Inkwell
