As always, my friend, your pen directs me to the Word. The Lord Almighty has continued to bless me, dearest friend, through His Word and your long-time friendship and encouragement. As usual your post arrived in season. Even though my body grows tired of the constant ramblings from an uninformed administration, I take solace in your timely ministry to me though our relationship in our risen Savior. It pains me to report this beautiful and wonderful nation, built on eternal precepts, struggles from the lack of authentic leadership and a desire to be led by the Eternal One – the Author of Truth.
Yet, your timely words lift my spirit and point me to the light – where there can be no darkness. Christ warned of those who accepted lies for the truth and “where the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” Mat. 6:25 NIV. If the light in those in the place of leadership is darkness how great is that darkness. Does not Christ’s admonition imply something false masquerading as good – false ideas being promoted as truth? This is presently what is transpiring in and around the capital. If the people believe their words are truth – when indeed they are not – how great is the darkness.
The current state of the administration is unlike, the unifying spirit – even amidst the political disagreements in the formation of this great county – we experienced in those past days. Today a lack of real direction is evident. Worldly men and women, wise in their own eyes, cannot see beyond the awe in which they regard themselves. Recall the words of the beloved Apostle Peter regarding the days when, “scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, ‘Where is this “coming” he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 2 Pet. 3:3b-4 NIV Who is the liar then? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ…No one who denies the Son has the Father.” 1 Jn. 2:22b-23 NIV
Remember, the hours and days, we, collectively as a nation, spent on our knees and prostrate praying for the Lord Almighty’s blessings on this country. That we would hear from Him and that He would grant us the wisdom of Solomon. Did not we hear passionate discourse from our countrymen and patriots about the basis for the foundation of this great nation? Was it not our desire to build a nation that recognized and honored truth and justice? Was it not the Eternal Truth we proclaimed as the very fabric and foundation of this country? Of course it was. Did not John Adams, and the laborers who diligently worked to reach an approval of the Declaration of Independence believe it to be so? John Adams, in his correspondence to his best friend and spouse, Abigail Adams, penned:
“ The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity… I will avow that I believed and now believe that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”
Recall the words of the honorable Samuel Adams from the great State of Massachusetts, in the speech he delivered at the State House in Philadelphia:
“ He who made all men hath made the truths necessary to human happiness obvious to all… Our forefathers opened the Bible to all.”
Was this not the committment and understanding of both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson? As you rightly know my dear friend, John Adams wrote this very thing in his correspondence to his friend Thomas Jefferson:
“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
And the great orator Patrick Henry proclaimed his understanding of this foundation; built upon the very Gospel of Jesus Christ:
“It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.”
And the Honorable John Jay. Did he not also understand this was the precepts upon which our rulers should lead this country?
“Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”
Our current government is under attack, my dearest friend, not only from without, but also from within. Like that of Rome and Athens. Not only are we under siege from mortal belligerents, we are assailed inwardly through a spiritual and moral decay. Our leaders have turned their backs on the One who sustains us all. We are no longer led by men and women whose hearts are united with Christ.
Our friends and patriots of old, whose blood was shed for freedom, could not have fathomed the current state of affairs and the distance this country has strayed from where it once began. This has not happened quickly. It is has been slow in its infiltration, like the weathering of the shore through the constantly beating of the surf. But how? Through the subtle lie. The lie – we are told by those who are wise in the eyes of the world – we do not need God – we only need a benevolent and gracious government. Our leaders, and those who promote their lie exhibit an arrogance and a boldness equal only to Ahab and Jezebel of old! Our citizens rely self and look to men and women instead of the One who is able to save and destroy. The Lord Almighty. Our leaders have fallen in love with the world and are steering the ship onto the rocks – if we do not turn we will surely perish, and the freedom we so valiantly fought will be dashed to pieces under the weight of a mighty storm.
But we can change. If we are to have hope we must have Truth. The eternal truth my dearest friend – where there is no cheating, betrayal of confidences, making of excuses, flattery, or the like. Does not taking responsibility for an individual’s actions or inactions require truth? We do not see or hear such recognition from our current leaders. Their rhetoric is hollow as their behavior shouts hypocrisy. Why? Because they cheat, flatter themselves, and others, lie, deceive, shirk responsibility, and covet power. They constantly blame everyone and everything. They are in love with self and in love with this world. They have no place for the Lord Almighty. As James the brother of our Christ admonished:
“You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but give grace to the humble.’ Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you…Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” Jas. 4:4-8a; 10 NIV
I pray this old body will again be able to speak with the passion it once did – recall those days my dear friend? Surely you remember our long march to Concord.
As you accurately point out, not every knee has bowed to the spirit of this world or is intoxicated with the current administration. Clearly the Lord is at work, and again, I pray, He will send a revival across this land and the citizens’ eyes will again be opened.
Come Lord Jesus so our county will humble itself, turn from its ways, and see the eternal truth and light.
